Igloo Lodge
Sustainable travel in Greenland
Sustainability and consideration are central to us at World of Greenland. We are a Greenlandic company with a Greenlandic CVR number, and being a public company, we are ultimately owned by the people of Greenland. This means that everything we do is rooted in the local environment and aims to support and develop Greenland as a country.
Igloo Lodge is built around snow and cold, and tells the story of how both Inuit and expedition travelers have survived through millennia in the harsh Arctic winter. This enchanting landscape provides food for thought - for us who can observe the noticeable changes in nature and climate here over the years, and for our guests experiencing the Arctic winter for the first time. The lodge offers an ideal setting for reflection and contemplation, being isolated from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
Experiencing the beauty of nature in the remote Arctic is a dream for many, but we recognize that the journey itself is not without environmental costs. Flights to Greenland and further transport to our lodge inevitably leave a footprint on the planet that we cannot ignore.
Therefore, we have taken a number of steps to ensure that our lodges and your stay at Igloo Lodge is as sustainable as possible and has a minimal impact on the area.
You can read more about these steps on this page.
Let the memories live on
When you leave Igloo Lodge and Greenland's glittering winter landscape, you take home not only unforgettable experiences but also a deeper understanding of nature's diversity, fragility, and beauty.
We hope that, as our guest, you will let the nature experience resonate with you. We strive to do this every day, and we try to actively appreciate the opportunity to be right here, immersed in nature and in harmony with it. We believe that our travel memories can have a lasting impact, not only on ourselves but also on those with whom we share them. By sharing our stories, we can help foster a greater understanding of why it is important to preserve such places. Perhaps your experiences will inspire reflection on how we can all take small steps in our daily lives to live in greater harmony with nature.
Concrete measures that make a difference
We do this for our guests - good taste will enhance your stay. But we also choose Greenlandic ingredients as often as possible to reduce the need for transportation and CO2 emmission to the lodge, and to contribute as much as possible to local economic growth.
Our igloos are hand-built and made from 100% compacted snow - the natural snowfall around us. There is no artificial snow made by snow cannons, and no underlying structural frameworks as seen in many ice hotels. This is the real deal - simple and natural.
There is no need to transport water all the way to Igloo Lodge when we can source excellent-quality drinking water directly from the surroundings. Our "tap" water comes from melted snow or from a remote lake, which is disinfected through heating. Since the water is completely natural and free from chlorine, you might find it tastes different from what you're used to. But rest assured - this is simply because it is pure and requires no chemicals.
Igloo Lodge is World of Greenland’s first winter lodge. The opening of Igloo Lodge has been a significant and important step toward more sustainable tourism development in Disko Bay. Extending the season is one of the key focus areas in Visit Greenland's national tourism strategy, which we at World of Greenland are actively working towards as our guiding principle. With the launch of Igloo Lodge, we aim to highlight Greenland's winter tourism and help create more year-round positions within the local tourism sector.
Igloo Lodge and World of Greenland are owned by the Government of Greenland, and thus ultimately by the people of Greenland. We are deeply rooted in the local community, and our commitments extend beyond typical commercial goals. All our financial statements are publicly available on virk.dk, and any profits are reinvested into new and exciting concepts and products designed to create reasons to visit—benefitting not only ourselves but also our colleagues in the industry and the local community.
Strong partnerships are crucial for tourism and its development. At World of Greenland, we are very aware that partnerships with other local businesses not only contribute to local cohesion, skill development, and economic growth, but also add value for our guests, who care about the impact of their travel to Greenland
At World of Greenland, all employees pay taxes locally - regardless of nationality and the length of their employment
World of Greenland is an ISUMASSUISOQ for the Greenlandic Children’s Association. ISUMASSUISOQ can best be translated to "one who takes responsibility for others."
The purpose of this collaboration is to support the association's work in providing Greenlandic children - and thereby Greenland itself - a better future. This support includes summer camps, workshops for children and parents, cooperation on company visits and internships, and offering every child and young person a children's advocate when interacting with authorities.
In addition to sponsoring an annual amount, we also donate 20 kr. per person to the Greenlandic Children's Association, when you book a stay at Igloo Lodge.
When booking a night at our beutiful lodge, you therefore also help us giving Greenlandic children and our country a brighter future.
