Excursions at Igloo Lodge
Walking amongst Giants
This excursion is a combined snow mobile and snowshoe adventure. The excursion begins from Igloo Lodge, from here, we go by snow mobile to Aattartoq – the local hunter and fishermen community base throughout the winter. It is a beautiful drive, with numerous unique and spectacular views that greets us on each mountain top. We have repeatedly view of “Sermeq Avannarleq”, the dead glacier and the enormous ice sheet in the background.
We arrive at “Attartoq” after approximately 40 minutes’ drive. Here we are met by the frozen fiord Sikuiuitsoq. From the meter thick sea ice icebergs emerge in distinctive formations with nuances of blue and shinning white. But the area offers more than ice, in the cabins by the fishing grounds local fishermen and hunters find shelter from the darkness and the cold. Close by the sledge dogs rest on the sea ice.
We attach our snowshoes at arrival and give ourselves plenty time to move among the icebergs – the Giants of Greenland. We also get insight in the life as a hunter/fisherman in present Greenland, before we return to Igloo Lodge.
The excursion is an extraordinary possibility to experience a unique part of Greenlandic nature and culture at the same time.
The excursion replaces the snowshoe hike to the viewpoint.
It is only the guide who will steer the snowmobile, due to level of difficulty driving in the terrain.
All particpants must be at least 12 years old.
It is possible to rent “Fat Bikes” at Igloo Lodge. Fat bikes are mountain bikes with extra-large tires, that facilitates driving in extreme conditions such as snow.
On the fat bike you can explore the snow-covered winter landscape at your own pace.
We seriously recommend that you do not stray from the drawned or marked routes.
The bikes are rented for two hours.
If you choose to drive on the dog sledge trail, you need to duly keep an eye out for dog sledges that come from behind. When you encounter a dog sledge, you need to give way until it has passed you.
