Excursions at Glacier Lodge Eqi

Glacier sauna

* Requires one night at Glacier Lodge Eqi

We look forward to welcoming guests to our new sauna at Glacier Lodge Eqi.

The nature in Eqi calls for immersion and relaxation, and here the sauna is the obvious choice. Whether it's a heavy rainy day, a post-hike retreat or an evening session to round off the day, the glacier sauna will be a first hand choice.

In the outer lodge area with a fantastic view of the fjord and the calving glacier, there are now two beautiful saunas – of course with a large panoramic window.
In addition to the saunas, there is an ice cold outdoor shower and a "natural pool" where you can take a chilly plunge in cold, fresh meltwater from the Inland ice sheet.

Please note
We have two saunas - each with room for 6 people. You may thus risk having to share the sauna with other guests.
It is also possible to buy a private sauna. Please contact World of Greenland if you want this.
Essential oils will be prepared for you, but there will not be a "gusmaster".
Swimwear or underwear is required.

Hike to the Icesheet

* Requires two nights at Glacier Lodge Eqi

A hike to the ice sheet is long and very varied. We will encounter many different types of landscapes, from lush lowlands to windswept highlands, moraines and of course the ice sheet with its cracks, streams and glacier wells. On the trip, we follow the polar explorer Paul-Emile Victor's trail all the way to the ice sheet. In the late 1940s and early 1950s, supplies were transported by trailed vehicles for the famous ice sheet expeditions, and we can still see the remains of these machines, as well as an old cable car, today. Half-way through the day, we take a break in a beautiful valley with a view of a dead glacier and eat our lunch before we begin the hike across the moraine and into the ice sheet. In our humble opinion, this is the absolute highlight of the trip where you, among other things, get to experience the ice edge zone. We then head back to our lodges, where a well-deserved dinner awaits us.

Our guides are specially trained to take you on this trip on the ice, and they always bring safety equipment such as satellite phones, GPS, avalanche sticks and first aid equipment.

The trip is demanding, but it does not require special training or equipment. This is not a technically difficult hike, but since we walk 20 km and climb about 1.000 meters, you need to be in good shape.

Please note The tour departs from Glacier Lodge Eqi in the morning. Therefore, to participate you need a minimum of two nights in Glacier Lodge Eqi.

This hike is not suitable for children under 8 years old.

Hike to the Delta

* Requires one night at Glacier Lodge Eqi

This hike takes you to the edge of the delta. We have flora and fauna in focus when we walk past the French hut and continue towards the impressive Delta. Here the landscape opens, and you get a fantastic view of the delta.

Here the greyish meltwater from the ice sheet rushes out into a branched network of small rivers to eventually open into the bay. We walk on small paths along the coast and keep an eye on the possibility of spotting snow hares, polar foxes, bell flowers and marsh Labrador Tea. If we are lucky, we might even catch a glimpse of the sea eagles, which often build nests on the cliff edge. Both out and back you will find an amazing view of the Eqi glacier.

Please note
The trip starts from Glacier Lodge Eqi in the afternoon and is approx. 4 km long. The whole trip takes place in mountain terrain and takes about 3 hours.. Coffee or tea will be served along the way.

Hike to the glacier moraine

* Requires one night at Glacier Lodge Eqi

This hike is included in your stay at Glacier Lodge Eqi. The tour departs every day.

We leave after breakfast and hike directly towards the breathtaking glacier.

On the trip, we pass old remains from the expeditions that have taken place in the area. We cross a rushing stream and pass a beautiful lagoon.
Out here, only the continuous rumble and crash of the glacier breaks the silence.

After a steep climb up to the moraine, we are suddenly right next to the huge glacier front.
Here we take a well-deserved lunch break while enjoying the view and watching small pieces of ice falling from the ice wall.

Please note
The hike starts from Glacier Lodge Eqi just after breakfast on the day of departure.
The hike is approx 12 km long.
The whole tour takes place in mountainous terrain and takes around 5 hours. The terrain is flat most of the way, but the actual climb up the moraine can be tough.
We bring lunch and something to drink on the hike.
We are back at the lodge area just before departure back to Ilulissat.

Difficulty Level
1: Easy

An easy tour means that you must be able to walk a few kilometers in slightly hilly terrain. Like taking a walk on paths in the woods, with a little detour every now and then. You must also be mobile enough to be able to board a boat, even if it may sway a little.

2: Moderate

Accessible to anyone with good health, who is used to off-road walking and hiking. When it comes to sledding, we call it moderate, as you may have to get off the sled and walk / run next to it. In addition, you need to have a healthy back as there will be bumps along the way.

3: Challenging

On a challenging hike you must be able to walk up and down steep hills. You may also have to walk on loose rocks and cross streams, and walk on snow/ice. Involves hiking with a backpack. When challenging is used in connection with sledding tours, it is because we expec that you can walk / run after the sledge up hills, if this is needed.

4: Demanding

On a demanding hike we expect you to be in good physical shape. This means that you can hike long distances, maybe during several days, and that you can climb many altimeters during the day. Eg. our hike to the Inland Ice, where 1000 altimeters and 20 km must be climbed in one day. Demanding hikes involve hiking with your own backpack.

Strenuous

Expedition level. Requires considerable effort and perseverance. Only suitable for people in really good physical shape.
