Sailing amongst icebergs in Ilulissat

Boat tour at Ilulissat Icefjord

Everyone who visits Ilulissat must try this sailing tour between the Icebergs at least once. It is not without reason that it is one of our most popular tours.

The Icefjord is beautiful from land, but on this boat tour it is possible for us to get very close to the huge icy sculptures. These icebergs can be up to 100 meters high, and several hundred meters long and wide. Here you feel insignificantly small in the vast nature. It's hard to imagine - it has to be tried.

The icebergs are beautiful in all kinds of weather and in all seasons.
From May to September, the entire bay can be packed with small pieces of ice, while only the mightiest icebergs lie at the mouth of the fjord during the winter.
In bright sunlight, the ice shines chalky white and has the strongest contrasts. In cloudy weather, you will see way more nuances of color and structure in the ice. And in the midnight sun, a rosy glow is cast over the enormous colossi.
The ice can move quickly, and conditions can change from day to day – sometimes also from hour to hour. That is why each and every sailing tour amongst the icebergs is completely unique.

See the icebergs of Ilulissat

This classic boat trip at Ilulissat Icefjord lasts approx. 2.5 hours.

In addition to plenty of time to take pictures, there will also be a lecture about the ice on this boat tour. The ice can take many different forms and tructures, and it has had enormous importance for the basis of life in the area over thousands of years.

We use different types of boats on this iceberg sightseeing. Sometimes it is a larger boat with space for 35 people, and sometimes a smaller one with space for 10 people.

Did you know...?

  • The town of Ilulissat is named after the Icefjord - Ilulissat means "Icebergs".
  • The icebergs we see on this boat trip have broken off the largest glacier in the northern hemisphere - "Sermeq Kujalleq", which is located approx. 70 km inland from Ilulissat.
  • The largest icebergs takes approx. 1 year to float out to the mouth of the fjord, where they run aground and beach. Here they lie until they have melted enough to be able to float on, or until the pressure from the ice in the fjord pushes them further out into Disko Bay.
  •  Approx. 10% of all icebergs in Greenland come from Sermeq Kujalleq and flow out through Ilulissat Icefjord.
  • Sermeq Kujalleq therefore plays a major role in research on climate change and global sea level rise.

Difficulty Level
1: Easy

An easy tour means that you must be able to walk a few kilometers in slightly hilly terrain. Like taking a walk on paths in the woods, with a little detour every now and then. You must also be mobile enough to be able to board a boat, even if it may sway a little.

2: Moderate

Accessible to anyone with good health, who is used to off-road walking and hiking. When it comes to sledding, we call it moderate, as you may have to get off the sled and walk / run next to it. In addition, you need to have a healthy back as there will be bumps along the way.

3: Challenging

On a challenging hike you must be able to walk up and down steep hills. You may also have to walk on loose rocks and cross streams, and walk on snow/ice. Involves hiking with a backpack. When challenging is used in connection with sledding tours, it is because we expec that you can walk / run after the sledge up hills, if this is needed.

4: Demanding

On a demanding hike we expect you to be in good physical shape. This means that you can hike long distances, maybe during several days, and that you can climb many altimeters during the day. Eg. our hike to the Inland Ice, where 1000 altimeters and 20 km must be climbed in one day. Demanding hikes involve hiking with your own backpack.

Strenuous

Expedition level. Requires considerable effort and perseverance. Only suitable for people in really good physical shape.
