Hiking in Ilulissat

Hiking in the Disko Bay

Welcome to Ilulissat – a paradise for hikers!

Ilulissat, located on the west coast of Greenland, is a spectacular destination for adventurous visitors. One of the best ways to explore this breathtaking area is by hiking the incredible nature. The local operators offer a selection of hiking tour, but many hikes are possible to do on your own.

Disko Bay is known as an exotic, arctic pearl. Here you will find everything you want as a hiker – the clearest fresh air, the cleanest and untouched nature, the largest icebergs, traces from older Inuit societies and fantastic wildlife. In other words, the framework is set for a multitude of unforgettable nature experiences.

There are many exciting hikes in the area around Ilulissat. Hiking is most popular in the summer from June to September, due to the harsh arctic winter conditions. But some of the most popular hiking routes can easily be hiked all year round. We have collected the most popular hikes below.

Short about us

World of Greenland is a 100% Greenlandic company with deep roots in tourism around Ilulissat. We are part of the Air Greenland group, which means that we are owned by the Greenlandic government, and ultimately by the Greenlandic people. We are proud of that and it obliges us to be among the preferred providers to showcase our beautiful country.

World of Greenland does not organize excursions in Ilulissat but only from our lodges located outside the town. However, our sister company, Arctic Excursions, offers a platform that brings together many different local operators in Ilulissat.

We live for 2 things:

  • We aim to deliver the most exotic and unique experiences to the discerning and quality-conscious traveler, through a sustained focus on quality, accountability and sustainable development.
  • We lift Greenland.

We look forward to showing you our beautiful town.

Icefjord Hike, Blue Trail

If a walk to Sermermiut is not enough, you can hike the full "Blue Track" - a 7 km hike along the Icefjord. In addition to unparalleled nature, the area also offers traces of previous Inuit settlements. You can book a guided, or do the tour yourself. If you hike on your own, we recommend starting at "The Cleft" and hike towards "Sermermiut", so that you have a view of the biggest icebergs all the way.

Yellow trail and visit Café Asimut

The Yellow Route is a 3.5 km hiking trail that starts at the Icefjord Centre and ends at the Power Plant. The trail follows the headland around the Iceberg Bank, offering views of the largest icebergs and open waters with Disko Island in the background. Along the way, you’ll pass by the beautiful peat hut, which has been converted into a cozy café where you can enjoy lunch or a refreshment.

Hiking to Oqaatsut, Orange Trail

The Orange Trail is the longest marked route in the area. It starts close to Hotel Arctic, goes past the airport and out to "The Wide Bay". From here it continues up to the settlement of Oqaatsut. The hike is 22 km, and we therefore recommend that you find a boat that can take you back to Ilulissat again. It can be purchased through Ilulissat Adventure or Albatros Arctic Circle. There is also a small restaurant in Oqaatsut where you can have a well-deserved bite of lunch or dinner after arrival.

Hiking at Glacier Lodge Eqi

* requires an overnight stay at Glacier Lodge Eqi

Hike to the Icesheet

This hike is your only opportunity to hike to the Icesheet in the Disko Bay. The tour is approx. 22 km long, and takes most of a day. The tour requires a good physical shape, but you do not need to have any experience of walking on ice to participate in this magnificant hike.

Hike to the Delta

The hike to the delta is a beautiful and magnificant 3-hour hike in unspoiled terrain. The hike starts from Glacier Lodge Eqi and heads south towards a spectacular river delta formed by meltwater from the nearby Ice Sheet.

Hike to the glacier moraine

On this hike you will get up close to the Eqi Glacier, also known as "The Calving Glacier". The hike is approx. 12 km long, and the terrain is flat and forgiving most of the way. This tour is included if you have purchased a stay at the lodge.

Hiking at Igloo Lodge

* requires an overnight stay at Igloo Lodge

Snowshoe UNESCO

This showshoe hike from Igloo Lodge goes across the frozen lake in front of the lodge, and up through a small pass, crossing the UNESCO boearder. The pass opens out towards Ilulissat Icefjord, and here is the most beautiful view point, where we take a coffee break.

Walking amongst Giants

From Igloo Lodge we drive snowmobile out to the small parallel community, which is found far away from Ilulissat - here by the frozen fjord, the local fishermen stay to fish during the winter. On the sea ice, we can walk between frozen icebergs, while at the same time getting an insight into how you live as a fisherman in modern Greenland.

Difficulty Level
1: Easy

An easy tour means that you must be able to walk a few kilometers in slightly hilly terrain. Like taking a walk on paths in the woods, with a little detour every now and then. You must also be mobile enough to be able to board a boat, even if it may sway a little.

2: Moderate

Accessible to anyone with good health, who is used to off-road walking and hiking. When it comes to sledding, we call it moderate, as you may have to get off the sled and walk / run next to it. In addition, you need to have a healthy back as there will be bumps along the way.

3: Challenging

On a challenging hike you must be able to walk up and down steep hills. You may also have to walk on loose rocks and cross streams, and walk on snow/ice. Involves hiking with a backpack. When challenging is used in connection with sledding tours, it is because we expec that you can walk / run after the sledge up hills, if this is needed.

4: Demanding

On a demanding hike we expect you to be in good physical shape. This means that you can hike long distances, maybe during several days, and that you can climb many altimeters during the day. Eg. our hike to the Inland Ice, where 1000 altimeters and 20 km must be climbed in one day. Demanding hikes involve hiking with your own backpack.

Strenuous

Expedition level. Requires considerable effort and perseverance. Only suitable for people in really good physical shape.
